One Determined Self-taught Artist
Adelaide Based Artist, creating playful watercolour landscape paintings, inspired by vibrant places
Hello and welcome to my first blog post!
Hello and welcome to my first blog post. First of all let me say thank you for taking the time to visit my website. This space is the culmination of my journey as an artist and I am excited to share it with you. So here is a little bit more about me..
If you haven’t guessed already, my name is Calista. I am an Adelaide, South Australia born and bred artist. I never completed any formal qualifications in art so my art journey has been completely self guided.
I have been making stuff as long as I can remember. From polymer clay charms to paper clowns, resin paint palettes and more recently, ceramic bowls, I have always enjoyed the process of creation. This passion was particularly prominent in the space of visual art. Specifically painting. I think it is because of colour.
"I love working with wells of colour and the opportunities and potential they present when sitting on my paint palette."
I grew up surrounded by a family business, this led me to study a degree in Design and Marketing, allowing me to apply my creative mindset to a practical career path. It was during this time I learnt strong digital design and editing skills that have since become useful in my everyday creative pursuits. After spending many years working across different mediums and trying to find one that resonated with me, (a journey I am sure every artist has been on!), I decided it was time to dedicate myself to building a skillset in one specific area. I chose watercolour.
I set myself a goal. Complete one painting a week for an entire year. It had to be achieveable so I would create them in A5. I needed to be connected to the subject to maintain my motivation, so I chose landscapes, not just any landscapes. Places I had been, places that resonated with me. So I printed out photos I had taken, realizing in the process that I had closer to 100 than 52. It didn’t matter, I printed them anyway. I was determined to eliminate any opportunity for procrastination so I numbered them all. This was the order I was to complete them, I even noted paint supply rewards I could treat myself with when I reached specific milestones.
Over the course of the next year I balanced the early years of my career with dedicating time to building a mini portfolio of sorts. Painting beach scenes, cityscapes and outback landscapes in watercolour. During that time I took note of landscapes I enjoyed painting the most, brushes and techniques that worked best for me and of colours I found myself ‘drawn’ to. Excuse the pun. My work evolved and I redicovered my love of colour and form. I discovered my artistic style in this time and found that it was quite maximalist, incorporating vibrant colours and loud details.
"I didn't finish 52 in that year but I found a love for painting watercolour sunsets, clouds, oceans and trees. This is a project that is yet to be completed and I am in the process of sharing them online."
It was after pursuing this for a few years and sharing my paintings with close friends and family that I decided to start sharing on social media. I was nervous about sharing my landscapes though, so I started a second project. Fruit. A still life exploration in both watercolour and gouache paint. I enjoyed this project, and learnt a lot about working with colour but my passion for watercolour landscapes was still there. So once I was comfortable with sharing my art publically I switched to posting my landscapes.
Much like our growth as humans physically, intellectually and mentally I don’t believe an artistic journey is ever complete. So I will continue to update the blog page with new learnings as I go.
